ITS NOT FAKE NEWS, ITS BAD NEWS. Now that we have hopefully ended unfriending each other from Facebook, based on voting for Trump or Clinton, we settle (if that is possible) into a new reality that feels pretty crummy to me.
The raw reality is a modern day version of Game of Thrones, where combatants who have been elected to serve all of the people line up in partisan digital and media armor to behead each other.
A president who won election by responding to the resentment of the public over everything being fixed has found a comfort zone in a game of truth or dare where the truth is hard to unmask.
The same Republicans, who now jump to their feet in standing ovations, were in 2016 working feverishly to fix the party primaries to deny Trump any victories. And, my Party, the Democrats, who have now rolled out tired and overused solons to lead the loyal opposition, was in 2016 assuring each other that their cronyism and smug detachment from the mainstream and overt actions to rig debates and mishandle a stupid email dust up was okay. Baloney.
Donald Trump beat both parties on his way to the White House and he has assumed a mandate to tell the American people anything he thinks that they want to hear without regard to the highest of our people’s values, honesty.
We really don’t have “fake news.” We have “bad news.” Strip it all away and we have what has always been regarded as credibility of the highest office, diminished, if not destroyed. For all the bluster, bravado and fawning over our military, my father’s Purple Heart was paid for because of values he fought to preserve, not trumped up patriotism. Some folks have found all of this amusing, but it’s not funny.
Here is some of the bad news.
Nowhere but in America have people been politically divided about the health of a nation. I talked to my doctor about Obamacare at various stages of its young life, and we agreed that it was Washington insiders that mattered, not the thousands of people he sees each year who, without any insurance, aggravate skyrocketing costs for older citizens across America. And, for hard working families, the number one cause of bankruptcy now is a serious health episode for families uninsured. In Rural America, our supposed heartland, 85% of disability claims are for white middle aged folks who cannot get a job and descend into the cave of government assistance. The Republicans called it Obamacare and the Democrats have tried to call it Trumpcare. How about “NoteEnoughHealthyAmericansCare” for a nation swimming in emergency care debt that could have been prevented by ensuring for a healthier country. This, by the way is not a liberal notion, it is a conservative fact that if we prevent the costliest of health episodes and disabilities, we reduce healthcare costs overall.
Item #2. When I was a kid, we were told to hide under our desks because the Russians were going to bomb us and kill all of the nuns. That was pretty traumatizing but nothing like learning that people in our highest offices were playing loose with Kremlin forces that we taxpayers have coughed up trillions of dollars over three decades to ward off. It is such a poisonous pill to swallow that most of us want to play like it is just a bad dream. No, more bad news. Americans could have paid for healthcare, quality education and the grandest infrastructure schemes imagined had we not been scammed into dumping the U.S. Treasury into anti Soviet programs for most of our working lives. Now, the antics come back to money and individuals trying to sell off America for personal power, wealth and political gain.
Hypocrisy is the new norm. We kind of suspected it was dancing in the shadows, but now it is confirmed. New generations of children will look up to what really? What on earth do we care about as Americans? We have elected a leader who is a bomb thrower. When in deep water, there is dismissal and a new drama springs up. This is a nation of laws, not of skits and fits, right? Wrong. The bad news is that this raw reality programming is high drama, but highly damaging to the integrity of our nation, each other, our legacy.
The final bad news is that the Republicans, and not Democrats, will play the starring roles in the unseating of Donald Trump. Remember, he beat them first and they will remove him from office without any help from anyone else. It is, after all, the only way that they will have a party loyalist returned to the Oval Office. Any disruption of our democratic process causes a constitutional crisis for our nation, divides us, further undermines our integrity. That is bad news.
We are hearing that uncertainty is a good thing, all of a sudden. The entire world order is built on certainty and when it is eroded, so is the state or peace, comfort, cooperation, settlement and the fundamental understanding of right from wrong.
The Republicans I know don’t like liars. They really don’t tolerate phonies. They love the U.S. Constitution and feel a body blow to what they have stood for as fundamental to their beliefs. Card-carrying Republicans aren’t any worse than those pinko lefty Democrats. At our core, we are all Americans who have been let down by a corrupted system and now by a populist fix that just isn’t working.
None of this is fake news. It is just bad news.
