- The normal, non-warring condition of a nation, group of nations, or the world.
- A state of mutual harmony between people or groups, especially in personal relations.
- Freedom of the mind from annoyance, distraction, anxiety, and obsession; tranquility; serenity.
PEACE has been subjugated by people who feel such lofty aspirations in today’s aggressive society are but a fleeting illusion. In fact, the notion of PEACE may be finding a profound moment in history, as violence and winner-take-all characteristics are yielding unrelenting threats to humankind.
In seeking to erect a site devoted to PEACE, news, views, and merchandising actionable wear, our suspicions that the online market for PEACE was slim became apparent. It takes quite a search to find broad discussions about a topic so fundamental to our survival. PEACE sites come in few predictable types namely:
- Promoting states of calm and tranquility often highlighting Yoga or meditation techniques and providing emotive pearls of words, poems or music
- Anti war writings and sites that challenge violence in society
- Throwback sites that may remind you of the Summer of Love, where a freer approach to lifestyles reigned.
- All of these wonderful online sites serve a purpose for peace, and help build peaceful communities.
We are starting a new dialogue about PEACE as a way to connect ideas in the most modern ways possible. So, what are contemporary notions of PEACE? We have a believable base of operations in Key West, Florida, a little island where free expression and progressive ideas are celebrated daily amidst a cacophony of conflict in the greater state of Florida and beyond. With a little shop called The PEACE Store and contributors from far and wide searching out stories and constructing original thought, this blog entitle PEACE by PIECE is unfolding across the digital space where hopefully more like us can assemble for discussions and action.
There are numerous contexts for looking at PEACE, but let’s start with the reality that we seem to be always at war, with a lopsided budget aimed at the arming military and security forces at home. The axiom of we get what we pay for comes to mind. American’s, particularly our younger generations, have been left to believe that patriotism is only about aggression and that somehow to work for PEACE is radical or worse, not patriotic. History would say nothing could be further from the truth. So, hopefully the definitions above help to place in context a meaning for PEACE and rationale for this site.
While romantics may drift back to a time of PEACE and LOVE memorialized with Hollywood images of psychedelic trips, PEACE has been at the root of most religious teachings, holiday celebrations, and aspirational pronouncements – lofty ideals rarely practiced. So, we must ask ourselves, what can PEACE be today in a world of robust consumerism, world and personal conflict? To answer such a question may be too ambitious, so we are recommending demonstrating PEACE by being aware of diverse thoughts about the subject and through practicing best examples of peaceful coexistence. Along the way, we will offer a space for news, views, and displaying and wearing your belief about PEACE as being worth the effort.
